John Nicholson Butler
Charles Butler's Son
John was born in 1902. He was the son of Charles Butler and Margaret Talbot. John was a printer and linotype operator. He attained a Master's Degree in Science in 1934, and gained extensive experience of mining and metallurgical engineering in the Philippines and the East Indies prior to WWII. When WWII broke out he was in the Philippines and was incarcerated in Santo Tomas prison in Manila where he stayed for nearly three years. In 1952 he joined the Mackay School of Mines at the University of Nevada to lead an AEC Project. At the end of the project he stayed on as Professor of Metallurgy and was frequently Acting Dean of the College. He was Chairman of the Department of Metallurgy from 1966-1969 and Chairman of the Department of Mining from 1969-1971. His wife, Linnie, died in Reno. He passed away in 1984 in Washington State.
