Spencer Perceval Butler was a lawyer and administrator. Son of of George Butler, who was an English schoolmaster and divine, Headmaster of Harrow School from 1805 to 1829 and Dean of Peterborough from 1842 to his death in 1853. Father of Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler, who was an officer of the Indian Civil Service who was the leading British official in Burma for much of his career, serving as Lieutenant-Governor (1915–17 and 1922–23) and later Governor of Burma (1923–27).
